One thing I noticed was that the Turkish Flag was represented everywhere, in front of hotels, businesses, homes, on boats. The Turkish flag was hard to miss. Our tour guide gave us the meaning of the Turkish Flag. It is Red flag with a white crescent moon and a star in its center. The flag is called AyYildiz (meaning moon star-literally) or Albayrak (Red flag). Also referred to as Alsancak (Red Banner) in the Turkish National Anthem. The flag uses the same symbols of the late flag of the Ottoman Empire which were adopted in 1844 with the Tanzimat reforms; though the shape, placement and shade of the color vary. The geometric proportions of the flag were legally standardized with the Turkish Flag Law in 1936.
